Q. What is the frequency response range for FOXPRO game calls?
A. The frequency response range for the AR4, XR6, FX3, and FX5 is 40 Hz - 22 kHz.

Q. What is the decibel rating for FOXPRO game calls?

A. The SPL or sound pressure level of FOXPRO game calls is measured by passing a 1W tone through the unit and taking a measurement at a distance of 1 meter from the speaker. With the FX3 this results in an SPL of 112dB. With the SP108Z deluxe loudspeaker attached, he SPL is 120dB.

With the 38, 48, 416, and 532 under the same conditions, the SPL is 106dB. With the SP108Z deluxe loudspeaker attached, the SPL is 114dB.

Be aware that some manufacturers claim pretty amazing SPL from their callers, but they will never reveal how far away from the unit they made this measurement. You can quickly add 3dB by simply halving the distance of the microphone from the speaker. So if at 1 meter we measure 114dB, at .5 meter it would be 117dB, .25 meter 120dB, and so forth. It is quite obvious how one can advertise extremely high SPL, but without the point of reference, the number presented is meaningless.

Q. What is the signal-to-noise ratio for FOXPRO game calls?

A. The signal-to-noise ratio is defined as the ratio of the desired signal level or information to the undesired signal or noise level in an electrical system. The maximum theoretical S/N of any 16-bit digital device (including FOXPRO products) is 96dB. This number equates to 6dB per bit, leaving 1 bit for the noise reference.

The best practical S/N ratio is, therefore, 15 bits time 6dB or 90dB. This is universally accepted in the electrical engineering world. Full system measurements will nearly never produce S/N numbers of 90dB or more without lies, trickery, or blue smoke and mirrors. Always view with great skepticism anyone who quotes a higher number such as 110dB. You should demand an explanation, but be prepared for lots of anger, hate, and double-talk.

For reference, the S/N ration of a vinyl record is 60dB, a cassette w/o Dolby is around 50dB, and a typical CD player is around 80dB. In the world of wildlife callers, if the playback S/N level exceeds 70dB or so, further improvement offers no practical advantage in the vast majority of cases, due simply to the fact that S/N ratios of most recording devices and microphone's rarely exceed this figure.

The S/N ratio of the 38, 48, 416, 532, and ZR2 is 65dB. The dynamic range is 80dB. The S/N ratio for the AR4, XR6, FX3, FX5, SC3, and SC5 is 85dB un-weighted and the dynamic range is 108dB. These measurements were obtained utilizing the entire digital and analog signal paths.

Q. Can I play two sounds at the same time?

A. You cannot be on a stand, pick any two separate sounds and have them play at once. There are a couple ways that you can work around this. One way is when you are ordering a new unit or having your unit reprogrammed at the factory to request that we mix two sounds together for you. For example, if you wanted a jackrabbit distress mixed with a coyote pup distress, we can easily do that for you. The overall quality of the two sounds being professionally mixed together under our supervision is going to be greatly improved.

Q. Are FOXPRO game calls waterproof?

A. No, not waterproof. We say splash proof. If you are caught in a light rain, there is little need to worry. If you need to use the caller in a driving rain, it is best to place it into a plastic zip lock "baggy" to keep out the rain. This has virtually no affect on the sound or volume. If the caller gets very wet, wipe it off as soon as you can. You should also unscrew the speaker to dry out any water that gets inside the caller.

Q. How well do FOXPRO products work in the cold?

A. Very well. Since there are no moving parts inside, battery energy is not wasted on mechanical motion. However, we are still subject to the physics of battery chemistry. Battery performance is generally diminished at extreme cold temperatures. The best batteries to use at severe temperatures are the "AA" Lithium types intended for digital cameras. The FOXPRO callers have been tested to -40 degrees with these batteries.

Q. Can I attach a high-powered or amplified device to my external audio jack?

A. No. It is not recommended that you attach any high-powered or amplified devices into the external audio jack on any FOXPRO game call. The high voltage could damage the unit. The external audio jack is designed for use with such devices as portable MP3 players, CD players, tape players, and so forth.
